Due to continuing increases in attendances in the Emergency Department of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) it was acknowledged that a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) facility was essential in ensuring patients were seen and treated in the most appropriate setting and ensuring compliance with non-admitted Patient Experience Times (PET). Local Injury Units within an Emergency Care Network, provide care for non-life threatening or limb-threatening injuries for limited hours’ of patient access. They form a differentiated unscheduled pathway to divert patients away from undifferentiated attendances at the MMUH main emergency department.
