- The development will consist of the redevelopment, refurbishment and extension of Crawford Art Gallery (a Protected Structure). The proposal consists of: A new 7 storey over ground floor extension to the existing building, combined with alterations, renovation, repurposing and enhancement of the existing protected buildings. The overall Gross Floor Area of the existing and new buildings is 5,560 metre squared.. The works shall include the complete replacement of the existing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems with new installations throughout the existing building and the new extension. The new heating systems will source their thermal energy from a combination of air-cooled and water-cooled (through closed-loop pipes embedded in the concrete foundation piles for the new extension) heat pumps and natural gas fired boilers which will act as a backup to the heat pump plant. The existing ventilation systems for the Van Egeraat galleries will be reconfigured to provide close control of the indoor environment (temperature, humidity and CO2 levels) of the lower gallery with mixed mode control for the upper gallery. Underfloor heating systems will be adopted in several spaces including the sculpture gallery and reception. Close control of the art store rooms with automated fire suppression systems and manual smoke clearance systems will be provided. A Building Management System will control all HVAC plant and actuation of openable windows or panels in the building envelope to effect natural ventilation. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) parameters will be monitored, recorded and archived on BMS computer and in the Cloud. Energy metering will require both electrical and thermal energy metering. Fire protection systems will include for fire fighting lift services, a hydrant dry riser, smoke clearance system and fire extinguishers throughout. Public health systems will include all water storage and delivery networks with all internal drainage to upstands on the ground bearing floor. The building will be seeking BREEAM Excellent certification and BER certificates in line with Government policy ie A3 for new wing and B2 for existing building.
